During this workshop, taught by local artist Kim Murton, you will learn how to make a hollow form that will then be turned into a whistle. Kim will demonstrate hand building techniques for making animals, birds, and faces, ending with adding the whistle reed. You will then paint the whistles and practice sgraffito (carving through the paint to the clay below). Choose from making 1 large whistle, or 2 smaller whistles (smaller ones will make a higher pitched sound, larger ones will make a deeper sound).
Your instructor, Kim Murton, is an experienced & highly skilled ceramicist, who specializes in sculpture work (often with very whimsical themes) that highlights carving & sgraffito techniques. She doesn't limit herself to ceramics though! Kim also works in textiles and illustration. Explore her work on her Instagram pages @murtonkim (ceramics) and @kimmurtondraw (illustration). Her formal training includes time at The Boston Museum School, Cooper Union in NYC, and the Oregon College of Arts.
Grab your friends, family, or come solo for this unique workshop!
After the workshop, the Kilnfolk team will bisque fire your piece, as well as apply a clear coat to your whistle to add a glassy finish.
