CLARK COLLEGE HOSTS STATEWIDE STUDENT SCIENCE COMPETITION
WHAT: Hundreds of students will be gathering in Vancouver, Washington, this month to compete in the
Washington State Science Olympiad. The top five to 10 teams from four regional tournaments
will be represented at the state tournament, and the top team from each division at the state
tournament will go on to compete in the national tournament at the University of Wisconsin in
Madison on May 20 to 21 of this year. Competing activities fall into five categories: Life,
Personal & Social Science; Earth & Space Science; Physical Science & Chemistry; Technology
& Engineering; and Inquiry & Nature of Science.
Scheduled competition activities open to spectators include:
Battery Buggy: building and testing electric vehicles for stopping accuracy.
Bottle Rocket: launching previously built rockets for longest air time.
Storm the Castle: testing launch effectiveness of previously built catapults.
Towers: designing and building the most efficient tower.
Car of Tomorrow: constructing battery powered vehicles with propellers to move them
down a magnetic track.
Helicopters: achieving maximum flight times of previously built rubber powered
helicopters.
Mission Possible: demonstrating the success of a Rube Goldberg-like device.
Mousetrap Vehicle: racing vehicles powered by mousetraps.
The annual Washington State Olympiad will be hosted by Clark College, which supports this
organization through its Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Unit.
Local industries and around 200 volunteers will support the event.
Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of
science education through student competition in science tournaments. Now in its 25th year, the
Washington State Science Olympiad has continued to support science education for students to
participate in activities that include building and testing scientific creations.
